High desert here we come…
Who knew Texas had so many mountains?
The region is 1 million desert acres with less than 12,000 people. Perfect place to get away from it all, including phone service.
‘Gorgeous’
- Santa Catalina Gorge
We did 2 hikes in and spent one day in the park. The two hikes: The Lost Mine Trail and Santa Elena Canyon.
Cacti and Cliffs
We started the day hiking the Lost Mine Trail, drove 1 hour on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, then ended the day hiking at Santa Elena.
Big Skys, Big Views, that’s Big Bend.
There was something very special about hiking the Santa Elena Canyon at dusk. We had most of the canyon to ourselves accompanied with the most enchanting light you could ask for. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Canyon seemed to act as sound barrier and created the most peaceful space i’ve ever been to.
As of now, West Texas is the only place I’ve ever been to where I experienced pure silence. It’s both amazing and ironically deafening.
A top the Lost Mine Trail amidst the Chisos Mountains
Epic Views everywhere.
View heading into the canyon.
View once inside the canyon.
Alone deep in the canyon at the end of the trailhead.
That moment when your shoes match the landscape perfectly…
Noah is really proud of my Nike Air Max shoe game. He was a big sneaker head back in the day. He still is at heart.
approaching dusk…
Don’t be deceived. What you see in the picture is the moon, not the sun.
Luckily a full harvest moon guided our accidental night hike.
It got dark fast. LOVED the night hike, although it was slightly terrifying knowing that there are bears and cougars. No lions or tigers.
We used the Gage Hotel in Marathon TX to get as close to Big Bend as we could with out actually staying in the park.
The Gage Hotel was everything I ever wanted a West Texas hotel to be.
Located in one of Americas Last Frontiers.
Built in Marathon Texas, it draws influences from cultures of the North American Indians, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo Cowboys.
I fell in love with all the details.
